I suppose networking professionals do more scripting than actual programming. Is it the most elegant language? Whereas I've used Python in more scientific applications, I'd say Perl is more appropriate for networking professionals. Perl is a general-purpose programming language originally developed for text manipulation and now used for a wide range of tasks including system administration, web development, network programming, GUI development, and more. Extensive network design and maintenance experience in both large scale commercial and cutting edge academic research networks. Now, however, Perl is used in a wide variety of programming instances, including Web development, network programming, bioinformatics and others. Large networking It's reasonably common to use a PHP or Ruby framework for the web view, Perl or Python for the network polling and a SQL Database to store the data. Perl provides direct access to the C library routines for socket communication. I think a collaborative effort of all Perl programmers out there to share their experiences with doing something more than ETL or coding yet another database application in the form of a cookbook (maybe a wiki?) would be cool. The vision is that we will all have to do some programming in the future to glue various parts of our systems together. Programming: Fluent in C, C++, Perl and PHP; I pick up new programming languages very quickly.
